The Moving Image.
Mark and FIlmmaking.
Filmmaking was introduced to me in high school, like the transformative period it is for all. This was sparked by some classes I took in school and most importantly some dear and talented close friends who motivated me to make short films with them. This was an important period because it allowed me to blend my passion for photography with filmmaking. I've always felt more comfortable behind a camera than in front of it, but this chapter in my life allowed me to grow as a cinematographer and beyond it.
It is my firm belief that moving to Canada without a doubt allowed me to grow not only as a person but as a filmmaker. I have been actively involved in producing and participating in films while also attending different film festivals and even being nominated for best cinematography in the New Brunswick 48-hour Film Festival in 2023.
Moreover, since May of 2023, I have been working with UNB Media Services. Initially as a video processor, where I would have to go over UNB's archival footage and look for parts that could be of use for future projects while also colour-correcting it and saving it accordingly. A year or so later I have been leaving the desk more and going on shoots with the team, both for video and photography. I am thankful for this job as it has rewarded me with great experience in cinema cameras, photography, editing, and even dealing with clients.
That being said, these are some of the short films I have participated in, most of them I am usually behind the cameras but have different roles.
Dir. Ty Giffin
A short film by Ty Giffin. Starring Cassidy Dewar. Grip and Sound by Mark Kincey. Produced with the support of the New Brunswick Film Co-op through the Bolex Film Scholarship.
Shot on Kodak 250D 7207 16mm film.
On Melancholy (2025)
Dir. Mark Kincey
Freed from the clutches of an obscurant evil, Louise makes a desperate break under the cover of night.
For this short film, I was the director of photography and also the director. I have a great sense of pride for this precisely because of what we achieved in 48 hours. Everyone that worked in this was extremely talented and driven. We were awarded Best Picture and Best Cinematography while also being nominated for an additional six categories including Best Sound, Best Editing, Best Directing, Best Lead Performance, Best Inspiration Package, and Best Original Score at the New Brunswick 48hr Film Festival. Our prompts were: having the film under 5 minutes, we drew styrofoam heads as our objects and attic/crawl space as our location, and the film had to have a match cut and/or a crash zoom.
Agares (2024)
How to Get Rid of a Ghost (2023)
Dir. Liam Mulherin and Julian Fan.
Bloodcurdling screeches. Objects moving on their own. Rancid smells coming from your air ducts. These signs can only mean one of two things: radon or ghosts. Both have the same solution: Spirit Phantom Exorcizing Removal Materials – SPERM for short. In under five minutes, renowned ghost hunter and pardoned tax evader Hugh Jass demonstrates his most legal invention yet.
For this short film, I was the cinematographer. The short was filmed on a 16mm Bolex camera in two days. In addition, How to Get Rid of a Ghost was also screened at the Silverwave Film Festival in Fredericton, NB.
The Dream (2023)
Dir. Michelle Allard
Where do we go when we fall asleep?
Like the previous short, I was also a cinematographer and it was also shot on a 16mm Bolex camera. However, in this project, we were instructed to not record audio as we were shooting and completely do it in post-production, especially with Foley.
I'll be Watching You (2022)
Dir. Mark Kincey
Every step you take, I’ll be watching you.
This project was extremely challenging as it was something that we had written, shot and edited within a week and a half. There are things that I would change from this but this was my first time directing a film and that's where the value lies for me. I just wanted to play with horror as it's a genre that often invites and engages the audience more than any genre.
Tempos (2021)
Dir. Eduardo Machado
On his last day in Brazil, Dut spends time with his friends around the neighbourhood reminiscing about old times and longing for the future. In a cathartic moment, they perform “Times” by Flying Kites. TEMPOS is a celebration of moments past, the fraternity of friendship while growing up, and the hope for a future where there will be more time.
This short film was directed by my talented friend Eduardo Machado who has been doing phenomenal work. Unlike the previous shorts, this was the first time I was in front of the cameras for a short film. This was a special short film as it is something extremely real where Eduardo perfectly encapsulated a very unique moment in our lives where we drift off but celebrate the memories. This was shot in Brazil and released when I was moving to Canada and Eduardo to the United States.
Acho que Estou Ficando Velha (2021)
Dir. Luiz Felipe Aranha
Fabinho’s Grandma grapples with understanding her grandson’s sexuality.
Like the previous short, this one was also directed by an amazing close friend of mine, Luiz Felipe Aranha, who is a very talented cinematographer and director who has worked on numerous projects and shorts. This was an interesting project as we were an official selection of the 2021 Mostra Cine Diversidade in São Paulo and placed second in the festival. In this short, I was a gaffer but the standout to me was when we used a loose analog lens with a digital camera, risky but beautiful. Unfortunately, this short film is in Portuguese and does not have subtitles - yet!
Astro (2020)
Dir. Flora Serra
What is the limit of your passion?
This was my first time working with my talented friend Flora Serra, who is now an alumnus of the University of the Arts London. This was an interesting project to work on where a simple story was creative. Moreover, this short film was an official selection of the 2020 Cinefantasy Film Festival. Luckily, this short film was made months before the COVID-19 Pandemic happened.
Modulation (2019)
Dir. Eduardo Machado
Dutão must choose between his band and an internship. Will it be music or the office?
This was my first time working with Eduardo and it was amazing to see him work with this directorial debut. I was glad that he wanted me to work with him since we had just met a couple of months prior to the making of this short. I love how Eduardo perfectly blends his love for music and filmmaking in his work.
